7 Nicotine Pouch Myths, Corrected
Nicotine pouches arrived in Great Britain in 2019, which makes them a young product with a lot of second-hand information attached. Some of it comes from confusion with snus, some from coverage of the Tobacco and Vapes Act, and some from assumptions carried over from vaping.
Here are seven of the most persistent misconceptions, and what the position actually is.
Key takeaways
● Nicotine pouches are not snus—snus contains tobacco leaf and isn't legal to sell in the UK
● Tobacco-free does not mean nicotine-free, and nicotine is addictive
● Pouches aren't being banned in the UK; an age of sale of 18 applies from 29 October 2026
● Flavours aren't being restricted on that date
● The mg figure on a can isn't directly comparable to a vape mg figure
● Pouches don't require spitting
● A higher strength isn't automatically a better pouch
Myth 1: Nicotine pouches are just snus
They aren't, and the distinction is legal as well as technical. Snus is a moist powdered tobacco product containing tobacco leaf, and it isn't legally available for sale in the UK. A nicotine pouch contains no tobacco leaf at all—the nicotine is used in purified form alongside plant fibre, a pH adjuster, flavouring and sweetener.
The confusion is understandable. Both sit under the lip, both look similar, and many UK users say snus when they mean pouches. But a shop selling you snus and a shop selling you a nicotine pouch are doing two different things, only one of which is lawful.
Myth 2: Tobacco-free means nicotine-free
This is the most consequential misconception on the list. Tobacco-free describes the absence of tobacco leaf. It says nothing about nicotine, which is present in every nicotine pouch and is an addictive substance.
It has practical consequences too. A cotinine test—the sort used in life insurance medicals—detects nicotine regardless of its source, so a tobacco-free pouch will register on one exactly as a cigarette would.
Myth 3: Nicotine pouches are being banned in the UK
They aren't. Coverage of the Tobacco and Vapes Act has been widely misread on this point.
What happens on 29 October 2026 is that an age of sale of 18 becomes law for all consumer nicotine products, free distribution is banned, and vending machines dispensing pouches are banned. Pouches remain entirely legal for adults to buy and use. Nothing is being withdrawn from sale.
Myth 4: Flavours are about to be banned
Not on 29 October 2026, and not at present. The Act gives the Government powers to regulate flavours, packaging and display in future. A power is not a rule—any actual restriction requires separate regulations and public consultation, and none has been made.
The eight CLEW flavours—Cool Mint, Spearmint, Menthol, Wintergreen, Blueberry, Watermelon, Coffee and Citrus—are unaffected. It would be inaccurate to describe future restrictions as decided when they haven't been.
Myth 5: A 20mg pouch is like a 20mg vape
The figures look comparable and measure different things. A nic salt labelled 20mg contains 20mg of nicotine per millilitre of liquid, and how much you take depends on how much you vape. A pouch labelled 20mg contains 20mg in that one pouch.
There's also a control difference. Vaping is adjusted draw by draw; a pouch is fixed once it goes in and releases for up to 45 minutes. This is why adult vapers moving across are advised to start at 5mg or 10mg rather than matching their vape figure.
Myth 6: You have to spit when using a pouch
You don't. Spitting is associated with traditional tobacco products, not with modern nicotine pouches. A pouch increases saliva production slightly, and swallowing normally is fine.
There's no need to work the pouch, chew it or move it about. Placing it under the upper lip and leaving it alone produces a steadier, more comfortable session, and reduces the swallowing of large amounts of nicotine-rich saliva that can contribute to nausea or hiccups.
Myth 7: Stronger is better
Strength is a fit question, not a quality one. A 20mg pouch isn't a better product than a 5mg pouch; it contains more nicotine, which suits some adult users and not others.
Flavour is unaffected—every CLEW flavour tastes the same across 5mg, 10mg, 15mg and 20mg, so there's no sensory reason to choose a stronger pouch than suits you. And since nicotine is addictive, there's no benefit in taking more of it than you need. Starting low and adjusting upward is easier than the reverse.
Eight tobacco-free flavours, 5mg to 20mg—shop the CLEW range.
Nicotine is highly addictive. CLEW Pouches UK products are intended for adult users (18+) only. They are not suitable for non-smokers, anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or anyone with a medical condition that could be affected by nicotine. Do not chew or swallow the pouch. If in doubt, please consult a healthcare professional.
